IBA Daytona Bike Week Party

IBA Daytona Bike Week Party

The Iron Butt Assoc. (IBA) is in town for their annual Daytona Bike Week Party. Yes, they hold their event here in Jacksonville, not Daytona. There’s a lot less traffic here in Jacksonville and Daytona is only 80 miles down I-95. Just down the street to a group that doesn’t recognize any ride of less than 1000 miles. Last year I was parked next to a rider from Atlanta (350 miles north) who had done a 100ccc ride to come to the event. That would be Atlanta, GA to Savannah, GA to San Diego, CA to Jacksonville, FL. Roughly 5000 miles to arrive at a destination 350 miles from home.

During the event, each year, the group sponsors a pair of certificate rides. A Saddle Sore 1000 (SS1K), 1000+ miles in under 24 hours, and a Bun Burner Gold 1500+ miles in under 24 hours. Both rides use flag photos of checkpoint locations and a final gas receipt (time, date, location) as proof of your ride. Last year’s SS1K stayed in Florida. This year we will be riding in Florida, Georgia & Alabama.

I will of course be taking checkpoint photos and, like last year, I will shoot a bit of video along the way. Therefore, once I have completed the ride, I will post about the experience. Unlike last year, I will have my spot tracker running throughout. I have embedded the trip map below. Nothing will appear on it until I start the ride. However, once the ride begins my location will be marked every 10 minutes. The result will be a breadcrumb trail of the ride as it happens. If you would like to follow my progress, visit this page from time to time.

The ride will be taking place for 24 hours beginning 06:45 3/15/18.
